Tell Congress to Ban Wildlife Poisons!

Recently, the Bush Administration stripped endangered species protection from gray wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies. These wolves face a range of threats, including the use of two toxic chemicals in government-run predator control programs. Please ask your Representative to support HR 4775, a bill banning two deadly poisons that kill gray wolves and many other wildlife species.

I urge you to support a bill introduced by Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR), HR 4775, which would ban the use of two highly toxic chemicals being used in predator control devices. Under the USDA's Wildlife Services program, more than 1.5 million animals are killed each year at a cost of more than $100 million, all in the name of protecting livestock. Even though predators kill only a tiny fraction of our nation's livestock, USDA's Wildlife Services uses these dangerous toxins (Compound 1080 and M44s), along with aerial gunning and trapping, to kill wolves, coyotes, bears, cougars and other animals.

It is unconscionable that taxpayer dollars are being used to fund the Wildlife Services predator program, especially considering that both of these deadly poisons pose great risk not only to wildlife but to humans, pets, and the environment. Both poisons have been rated by the EPA as having the highest level of acute toxicity. Given the variety of effective and non-lethal alternatives, these poisons should be banned.

I hope that Congress will unite against these deadly toxins and support HR 4775.
