Ear-splitting military sonar is needlessly killing whales and other marine mammals throughout the world's oceans. Yet the Navy has refused to put effective safeguards in place during testing and training. These simple precautions -- such as avoiding sensitive habitats where whales are known to migrate and raise their young -- would help prevent the infliction of pain and death on these magnificent animals without compromising military readiness.
