Tell Your Representative to Put Polar Bears First

We’ve got to stop the Bush Administration from rushing through the sale of oil and gas drilling leases in Alaska’s prime polar bear habitat -- before it makes a final decision about protecting these imperiled bears under the Endangered Species Act.

Sign the message below and tell your Representative to support the Markey bill (H.R. 5058) that will reverse these new oil and gas lease sales for the sake of polar bear survival.

I urge you to put polar bear protection ahead of new oil development by supporting the Markey bill (H.R. 5058) that would reverse the go-ahead for Lease Sale 193 Area in the Alaska Outer Continental Shelf Region of the Chukchi Sea -- until the Secretary of the Interior determines whether to list the polar bear as a threatened species or endangered species under the Endangered Species Act.

The Bush Administration knows that once polar bears are protected under federal law, the Interior Department will not be allowed to proceed with any new oil and gas development without first considering the impacts on the bear.

The impact of oil and gas drilling in Alaska's prime polar bear habitat could be severe.  Already in grave danger from global warming, which is melting their sea ice habitat, the entire population of Alaskan polar bears could be extinct in less than 50 years -- unless the government takes swift action to save them.

An oil spill would be disastrous since there is no proven method of cleaning up an oil spill in the Arctic's icy waters -- and oil-covered polar bears have virtually no chance at survival.

Please act swiftly to support the Markey bill before these oil and gas leases proceed on February 6.  And please urge the Bush Administration to move swiftly on protecting these imperiled bears under the Endangered Species Act.
