Scientists agree that unless we act soon to significantly reduce global warming pollution, average temperatures will continue to rise, causing more heat waves, air pollution, droughts and wildfires, heavier rains and flooding, rising sea levels, melting tundra and widespread loss of wildlife habitat. Urge your senators to co-sponsor and strengthen legislation that would cut global warming emissions.

I urge you to co-sponsor and strengthen the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act (S. 2191) when it moves to the Senate floor. The bill would set real, long-term reductions in global warming pollution and is the first bipartisan climate legislation in history to be voted out of committee. If you have already co-sponsored S. 2191, or voted for it in committee, thank you for your leadership on this critical issue.

The Nobel prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has made it clear that we must take urgent action to curb global warming pollution in order to avoid catastrophic consequences. Time is running out for effective action on global warming, and we must get started immediately. The longer we delay, the greater the impacts and risks, and the more dramatically we will have to cut emissions in future years to achieve the same results.

I urge you to support strengthening S. 2191 in two main ways:
1. Ensure that the targeted emissions reductions keep pace with scientific recommendations.
2. Reduce the total amount of emission allowances given to polluters for free.

I also urge you to oppose any weakening amendments that would compromise the integrity of the emissions cap or slow the overall emissions reduction timeline. For instance, a so-called "safety valve" would allow polluters to purchase an unlimited number of additional emission allowances, moving America off track.

S. 2191 provides a sensible framework for engaging the full Senate and moves the process of enacting mandatory federal climate legislation forward. I hope that you will support these practical policies to create a cleaner America and to confront the greatest environmental threat of our time: global warming.
