Urge Governor Schwarzenegger to sign an urgent clean air bill

A landmark bill to clean up pollution from California's ports and reduce freight congestion is expected to cross Governor Schwarzenegger's desk for his signature this month. Tell the governor to sign the Clean Ports Investment bill.

Please sign the Clean Ports Investment bill (SB 974) so that California can make long overdue improvements at our ports and along the congested highways and railroads that move cargo throughout the state.

The ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland together receive more than half the goods shipped to retailers throughout the entire country. Such huge amounts of cargo transport, using dirty diesel-fueled trucks, ships and trains, generate staggering levels of air pollution and associated health problems, including asthma, cancer and premature death. Every year that we delay taking action more families suffer from this burden.

If we are going to have world class ports that don't spew more and more pollution, industries that benefit from expeditious cargo movement must pay their fair share. Californians have taken on public debt to help deal with this problem, but should not continue to pay with their dollars or their health.

Once again, I urge you to sign SB 974 to fix crumbling infrastructure and polluting ports.
