Tell Congress not to let polluters weaken the Clean Water Act

Many of our country's small streams, which contribute to local drinking water supplies, are in danger of losing their Clean Water Act protections. Urge Congress to support a bill that would restore protections to these water bodies.

I urge you to co-sponsor the Clean Water Restoration Act (H.R. 2421/S. 1870). Today, significant parts of the nation's water resources are in jeopardy because of polluter-led attacks on the types of water bodies that the Clean Water Act can protect. The Clean Water Restoration Act would curb these assaults by specifying the kinds of waters that the law must cover, using the categories of water bodies that have been protected by EPA and Army Corps of Engineers regulations for decades.

The current uncertainty concerning Clean Water Act protections is enormously dangerous -- 20 million acres of wetlands in the United States could be considered "isolated" and therefore are at risk of pollution or destruction from losing Clean Water Act protections. Likewise, 59 percent of the nation's stream miles outside of Alaska do not flow all year, amounting to nearly two million miles of streams that, along with the countless wetlands adjacent to them, are in legal limbo in the wake of last year's messy Supreme Court split decision.

Congress, not the courts, must be responsible for identifying the water bodies that the Clean Water Act should protect. And Congress has known for 35 years that protecting all of the waters of the United States is crucial to accomplishing the fundamental goals of the law. It's time for Congress to say so again, and to say it clearly. The Clean Water Restoration Act is the way to do that, and I urge you to give this bill your full support by co-sponsoring it now.
