Move America Beyond Oil

Dear President Bush,
You have acknowledged that America is addicted to oil, but you have failed to use your executive power to help America kick the oil habit. I call on you to forge a cleaner energy future by taking the following steps immediately:
--Order your Department of Transportation to improve the fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks -- the cleanest, fastest, and cheapest way to reduce oil consumption.
--Order your Department of Energy to issue loan guarantees to refineries that produce clean and renewable ethanol -- fuel made from plant material -- which has the potential to virtually eliminate the use of gasoline.
--Order all federal agencies to purchase only hybrid and/or flexible fuel vehicles with the best fuel economy and run all their vehicles capable of it only on E-85 (a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline).
--Order your Department of the Interior to stop its rush to open Greater Yellowstone, the Western Arctic Reserve and other irreplaceable wild places to drilling that will only prolong our oil addiction and senselessly destroy our natural heritage.
--Order your Environmental Protection Agency to use the Clean Air Act to set carbon dioxide standards for power plants -- the nation's largest source of global warming pollution.
These Presidential actions can begin breaking America's dangerous addiction to oil, preserve our environment, slow global warming, save consumers billions of dollars, and lessen our dependence on undemocratic foreign governments. I urge you to take them immediately!
Sincerely, [Your name] [Your address]
