Thank you for your important proposal to designate a pronghorn migration corridor within the Bridger-Teton National Forest in order to protect the Path of the Pronghorn. As the pronghorn that summer in Grand Teton National Park prepare to begin their 6,000-year-old spring migration, new industrial development on the horizon makes it vitally important that we assure them safe passage to their ancient summer range.

I fully support an amendment to the 1990 Land and Resource Management Plan to designate this corridor, along with concrete guidelines for activities that would be prohibited in the corridor. Each year, a few hundred pronghorn travel the ancient migration route between Grand Teton National Park and the Upper Green River Valley -- the longest migration of a mammal in the Americas other than caribou. In some places, this corridor is not much more than 100 yards wide. If this vital pathway is severed by encroaching development, the last remaining Grand Teton pronghorn will not survive. Since as early as 1898 there have been proposals to protect these lands. To help ensure the survival of these pronghorn, I fully support permanent protection of the migratory path, including making certain that there is no oil or gas drilling inside the corridor and that fencing is friendly to pronghorn.

I also hope the Bureau of Land Management will follow your lead and protect the portion of the corridor that is under its management -- all the way to the crucial pronghorn winter range. The Upper Green River Valley's wildlife migration corridor is vital for healthy herds of pronghorn and other migrating animals. I applaud you for working to protect the Bridger-Teton National Forest portion of this valuable wildlife corridor.
