Tell the Bush administration to keep oil and gas wells out of Colorado's Baca National Wildlife Refuge.

I urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to block plans to drill in the Baca National Wildlife Refuge until a full environmental impact statement and management plan have been completed.  The Baca National Wildlife Refuge provides critical habitat for threatened and endangered species, including the bald eagle, greater sandhill crane, southwestern willow flycatcher and mountain plover, and should not be recklessly drilled.

The proposed drilling project currently being considered by your agency should not be approved without a detailed, site-specific analysis to determine its impacts.  The project could potentially lead to massive industrial development that would destroy wildlife habitat and important historical treasures -- including archaeological sites dating back some 11,500 years. Drilling-related activity would contribute to air and water pollution and generate excessive traffic and noise.

I urge your agency to consider the full range of options, including requiring the drilling company to use the strictest alternatives and mitigation measures to protect the refuge's imperiled wildlife and outstanding natural values. Please demand that a thorough environmental review is conducted before any harmful drilling is carried out.
