I am writing to ask you -- as one of the new owners of Ocean Garden Products, the largest importer of Mexican seafood to the United States -- for your commitment to protect the vaquita marina, the world's most endangered cetacean, and its habitat in the Upper Gulf of California. I am encouraged by the progress made over the past year toward the development of an effective management system for the Upper Gulf and its shrimp fisheries. The full participation of Ocean Garden, as the most significant buyer of shrimp from the area, has been essential to this process.

You have a responsibility to consumers to ensure that you are working to protect the region's marine life, improve the sustainability of the shrimp fishery and end illegal fishing in the Upper Gulf of California. These are all key elements of the agreements reached by Ocean Garden with NRDC, local fishermen and the government of Mexico.

Without effective monitoring of these agreements, illegal and unsustainable fishing will continue to decimate fish populations and drive the vaquita marina, a small porpoise unique to the Upper Gulf, closer to extinction. I urge you to maintain Ocean Garden's dedication to the efforts underway to protect the Upper Gulf of California and to take a leadership role in advancing the sustainability of the seafood industry.
