I am strongly opposed to a proposal under consideration by the BLM to drill 24 new gas wells in the heart of the White River proposed wilderness area. More than six years ago, the BLM concluded that nearly 16,000 acres of this stunning region are truly wilderness quality, stating "the spectacular scenery of the White River provides a dramatic backdrop for the hiker, rafter, canoeist [and] for fishing enthusiasts who visit this unique area." These lands should not be so easily sacrificed for oil and gas drilling.

The proposal to drill 24 new gas wells from 14 drilling pads, along with the construction of new roads and pipelines, threatens everything that is special in the White River wilderness. Instead of the environmental assessment that your agency has prepared, I urge you to conduct a comprehensive environmental impact statement, which would fully analyze the impacts of the proposed wells and surrounding energy development on all of the natural treasures of the White River wilderness. Before considering this proposal, the BLM also needs to study the cumulative impacts of the new wells, roads, pipelines and compressor stations that have been built to the north, east and west of the White River area in recent years.

Again, I urge you to hold off on approving this devastating proposal until the BLM has had time to analyze its full range of impacts on the White River proposed wilderness area.
