I oppose the proposal to drill 60 new gas wells -- and to construct new roads and pipelines -- in the White River wilderness inventory area. If approved, this proposal would significantly change this unique landscape.

The BLM is well aware of the outstanding natural values of the White River proposed wilderness area. Your agency inventoried these very same lands between 1996 and 1999 and concluded that nearly 16,000 acres had all the makings of "wilderness." The potential damage to this area from the proposed drilling project is significant, and your agency must prepare a comprehensive environmental impact statement to fully analyze the impacts of these wells and the associated industrialization that would accompany them. The proposed mitigation and other environmental protection "add-ons" to the project do not change the fact that the project would transform this remarkable area.

Over the past few years, the BLM has allowed the oil and gas industry to drill wells and to construct roads, pipelines and compressor stations around the White River wilderness inventory area without studying the cumulative impacts of these activities.  I urge the BLM to act immediately to complete a full environmental impact statement before it approves any new projects in this area.
