I am writing to voice my strong opposition to the massive proposed West Tavaputs natural gas development project. I am very concerned about the significant, long-term impacts that this project would have on the unique and important cultural values of the Nine Mile Canyon area and on the wilderness resources of the Desolation and Jack Canyon wilderness study areas and wilderness inventory areas.

The natural gas company behind this huge project is proposing a number of non-federal wells in Nine Mile Canyon itself, along with dozens if not hundreds of wells in side canyons and other public lands being considered for designation as a national historic district. Nearly 200 wells would be drilled in the remarkable wilderness-quality lands of the Desolation and Jack Canyon areas. The disruptive sights and sounds of the proposed development would be evident from Desolation Canyon and many of its tributaries.

Yet your draft environmental impact statement does not carefully consider the impacts of noise and other drilling-related disturbances on either Desolation Canyon -- a national historic landmark -- or Nine Mile Canyon, though these factors would significantly affect the experience of visitors to both of those areas. The authors of the draft have ignored the Bureau of Land Management's own river management policy for Desolation Canyon which provides that there is to be no drilling authorized "within sight or sound of the river." Moreover, even though the bureau is considering approving an action that would destroy the wilderness values of both the Desolation Canyon and Jack Canyon areas, your draft environmental impact statement did not even examine the option of protecting these two special areas as "wilderness study areas."

I strongly urge the Bureau of Land Management to adopt the "no action" alternative. I hope you will instead pursue smaller, more tailored projects that protect these outstanding resources. Present and future generations of Americans will thank you.
