Tell Your Senators to Put Polar Bears First

Help us stop Big Oil from drilling in Alaska's prime polar bear habitat -- until the Bush Administration protects these imperiled bears and their critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act.

I urge you to put polar bear protection ahead of new oil development by supporting the Kerry bill (S.2568) that would prohibit any oil and gas exploration activities in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas until the full impacts of exploration on polar bear populations are fully understood. The bill would also require that no drilling activity proceed until the polar bear is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and its critical habitat designated.

The impact of oil and gas drilling in Alaska's prime polar bear habitat could be severe.  Already in grave danger from global warming, which is melting their sea ice habitat, the entire population of Alaskan polar bears could be extinct in less than 50 years -- unless the government takes swift action to save them.

The Kerry bill also insists on strong protections to address any oil spills that could result from drilling activity. An oil spill would be disastrous since there is no proven method of cleaning up an oil spill in the Arctic's icy waters -- and oil-covered polar bears have virtually no chance of survival.

Please act now to support the Kerry bill.  And please urge the Bush Administration to protect these imperiled bears under the Endangered Species Act.
