Tell the Bush Administration to grant the polar bear full-fledged protection!

Most scientists are now warning that global warming could eliminate the polar bear's summer sea-ice habitat by 2040. Without dramatic cutbacks in global warming pollution, Alaska's polar bears could face extinction by 2050. Yet the Bush Administration's new plan to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act will do nothing to reduce global warming pollution or stop oil development in the heart of polar bear habitat.

Tell the Bush Administration to close the polluter loopholes and give polar bears full-fledged protection as an endangered species.

Your recent decision to protect the polar bear as a "threatened species" is a first step in the right direction but is riddled with too many loopholes to ensure the bear's survival. I am outraged you would allow global warming pollution and Arctic oil exploration to continue unabated while the polar bear is in mortal danger.

The scientific evidence is overwhelming that rising temperatures could cause Arctic summer sea ice to disappear by 2040 and Alaska's polar bears to go extinct by 2050. Polar bears are already drowning and starving. In the face of this unfolding disaster, it is too late for half-measures and polluter exemptions.

Please act now to close the polluter loopholes and give the polar bear full-fledged protection as an endangered species. I also call on you to designate critical habitat for the bear and devise a recovery plan that will protect that habitat against global warming pollution, oil and gas development as well as other threats.

The plight of the polar bear is urgent. We can still save this magnificent species but the window for action is closing rapidly. Please act immediately to pull polar bears back from the brink of extinction.
